How to Reset Your Luggage Bag Lock

by Hasnain Alam 07 Jul 2026
Step-by-step guide on resetting a luggage bag lock

Have you ever stood in front of your suitcase and forgotten the code? You are not alone. Maybe you bought a new bag. Maybe you forgot a code you set long ago. Or maybe you just want a new combination before your next trip. Good news: resetting a luggage lock is easy once you know the steps.

In this guide, we will show you how to reset the two most common types of suitcase locks. These are the normal 3-digit combination lock and the TSA-approved lock. We will also share a few tips so you do not get locked out again.

Step 1: Find Out What Type of Lock You Have

First, turn your lock over. Look for a small red diamond shape on it. This mark means it is a TSA-approved lock. It means airport staff can open it with a special key, without breaking it. If there is no red diamond, you likely have a normal combination lock. The reset steps are almost the same for both.

If your suitcase does not have a lock built in, it is a good idea to add one. A strong lock like our TSA Metal Lock gives you good safety and will not slow you down at the airport.

Step 2: Set the Lock to Its Current Code

Before you can change the code, the lock must be open. So first, enter the code that currently opens it. If you never changed it before, try the starting code most locks come with. This is usually 0-0-0.

Step 3: Open the Lock

Pull up the metal loop or slide the latch open. The lock needs to stay open for the next step to work.

Step 4: Find and Press the Reset Button

Most locks have a small button, switch, or lever. It is often on the side or bottom, or hidden just under the metal loop. Press and hold this button while the lock is open. On some TSA locks, this button is very small. You may need a pen tip to press it.

Step 5: Set Your New Code

While you keep holding the button down, turn the dials to your new code. Pick a number you can remember, but not something too simple. Try to avoid 000, 123, or your birth year, since these are easy to guess.

Step 6: Let Go and Test It

Now let go of the button. Your new code is now saved. Close the lock, mix up the dials, and then try your new code again. Make sure it opens easily before you trust it on your next trip.

What If You Do Not Know the Current Code?

This happens a lot, especially with old or second-hand bags. Try these steps before you give up:

  • Try common starting codes like 000, 0000, or 1234
  • Check the box or look for a sticker with a printed code
  • Check the brand name. TSA locks, Samsonite locks, and other locks may reset in slightly different ways, so search for your exact model if needed
  • If it is a TSA lock and you are at the airport, security staff may be able to help since they carry a special key

Pick a Lock That Will Not Cause Trouble

Many lock problems happen because the lock was cheap or weak from the start. A lock with worn-out dials or a weak spring is more likely to jam, slip, or become hard to reset.

If you are thinking about buying new luggage, look for one with a strong, built-in lock. Our Samsonite collection comes with a solid combination lock already built into the bag, so you do not need to add an extra one.

If you travel often and want something extra tough, check out our aluminium luggage collection. These bags have a hard outer shell and a lock that is easy to reset, so your bag stays safe on every trip.

A Few More Tips

  • Save your combination somewhere safe, not just on your phone lock screen. A note in your email drafts or a password app works well.
  • If you buy a second-hand suitcase, always set a new combination. You never know who else knows the old one.
  • If your lock feels bent, stuck, or loose, replace it before your trip. A broken lock is a bigger problem than a forgotten code.

If your lock still will not reset after trying all this, send us a message. We are happy to help you fix it or find a new one that will last.
